J-Mount Use and Tips
For a quick video on how to set up, visit:
Below, the steps to start using your J-Mount are outlined.
First, align the Y-axis shelf for the camera on your phone.
Second, insert shims into the eyepiece barrel if you have no case (thick shim), a thin case (thin shim) or a thick case (no shim).
Third, test with your phone, and make tweaks and adjustments to get the perfect image. See below for common scenarios.
Y-Axis Shelf Adjustment
Z-Axis Shim Adjustments
The shims provided are designed to set the appropriate z-axis distance for the smartphone camera to view the image from the eyepiece, much in the same way you adjust your eyes to see optimally.
- For those without a case on their phone, the thick shim is a good place to start.
- For those with a thin case, the thin shim should work well.
- For those with thicker cases, using the mount without a shim should work well.
Below are photographs of how shims are inserted and removed.
Installing on the Microscope
Once you've done the initial set up, place the mount on the microscope. The eyepiece barrel will open to account for various eyepiece sizes.
For best results, remove rubber eyepiece grommets! It will make getting the mount on and off much easier!
Push the mount all the way onto the eyepiece. Tap or click the photos for more information.
Once your mount is set for your phone, few additional adjustments should be needed!
Take the mount off and put it back on your microscope, the adjustments to the Z and Y-axis should remain more or less in place, so you'll be able to quickly use the mount and capture photos without much fuss.
Below are example photos if the mount is misaligned. Try adjusting the mount as described to correct for some of these issues. Click or tap the photos for more information.
